AN OVERVIEW OF SOME COMMON SCALP CONDITIONS

Some scalp conditions that you may encounter in your pharmacy include:

Dandruff

This is a common skin condition where white or grey flakes of skin appear on the scalp and in the hair.2

Seborrhoeic dermatitis

Seborrhoeic dermatitis is a chronic form of eczema which appears on areas of the body where there are lots of sebaceous (oil-producing) glands, such as the scalp.3 Seborrhoeic dermatitis of the scalp is characterised by scaly, itchy and red patches on the scalp.

Scalp psoriasis

Scalp psoriasis is an autoimmune skin disorder that causes raised, red, scaly patches on the scalp. It may appear as single or several patches, or in some cases it affects the entire scalp. It can also spread to the back of the neck, forehead and behind and inside the ears.4

Did you know?

In the 12-month period to March 2020, an increasing number of people reported experiencing scalp conditions such as dandruff, itchy scalp, dry scalp and sensitive scalp compared to the previous 12-month period.5

During the same 12-month period, 21% of people surveyed reported experiencing a medicated hair need while just 11% of people sought advice or a product recommendation from this category.5

This provides an opportunity for community pharmacy to promote this category and encourage more customers to seek advice and treatment for their scalp conditions to help them find relief from symptoms.
