Considerations for locally administered HRT
Local HRT results in a lower systemic dose of oestrogen compared to oral HRT; the oestrogen stays within the vagina and low levels are released into the bloodstream. However, patients may still have concerns or questions about HRT use. Note that local HRT, such as Gina, may be continued for as long as needed to treat the symptoms, but this should be assessed for every supply decision.1

There are also situations when patients should be referred to their GP for a discussion and assessment of any risks associated with using local HRT, and to determine whether any additional monitoring is needed. HRT should only be continued as long as the benefit outweighs the risk.
