Importance of Vitamin D

Vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin that is synthesised through the action of sunlight on the skin, and is also naturally found in a few foods (mainly oily fish and eggs). Vitamin D is a vital component of normal growth and development and maintenance of bones, and also contributes to the normal function of the immune system.1 It is therefore extremely important to educate your customers - particularly new parents who may not be aware of the vitamin D requirements for their newborn babies - about the significance of sufficient vitamin D intake. 

If an individual does not get enough vitamin D this could lead to a deficiency, which occurs when the plasma concentration falls below 25nm/L. Low vitamin D levels and deficiency can lead to weaker bones, rickets in children and, in adults, osteomalacia, higher risk of falls and reduced muscle strength and function.
