Health minister makes pledge after Rowlands visit
The health minister Will Quince visited a community pharmacy in his constituency of Colchester where he got a glimpse of the value of pharmacies bring to local communities, then insisted the government “is looking at how the role of pharmacy could be extended in the years ahead.”
During his trip to a branch of Rowlands in Naylands Road, Quince heard the views of the pharmacy’s team, who tried to impress upon him the important role they play in providing care to people, including helping them manage long-term conditions and live healthier lives.
“Community pharmacy is playing an increasingly important role in ensuring people in Colchester have convenient walk-in access to the healthcare support and advice they need,” he said, encouraging patients to “think pharmacy first” when looking to treat a minor ailment, get advice on their medicines, stop smoking or check their blood pressure.
“Pharmacies are not simply places to collect prescriptions, they provide a wide range of services and are the third pillar of access to primary care alongside GPs and A&E.”
Quince said the pharmacy team at Naylands Road were “doing a fantastic job” and insisted he admired “their dedication.”
Rowlands Pharmacy regional manager Laura French said: “We take great pride in supporting our local community with its healthcare needs. People come to us for flu vaccinations; weight management; stop smoking service; blood pressure checks; new medication service and CPCS.”
