NICE GUIDANCE FOR
MANAGING FEVER IN UNDER 5s⁴

NICE recommends a step-wise approach to managing fever in under 5s as shown below.

• EITHER
  IBUPROFEN OR
  PARACETAMOL

  Consider using either paracetamol or ibuprofen in children with fever who appear distressed

• SWAP TO EITHER
  IBUPROFEN OR
  PARACETAMOL

  Consider changing to the other agent if the child's distress is not alleviated

• ALTERNATE BETWEEN
  IBUPROFEN AND
  PARACETAMOL

  Only consider alternating these agents if the distress persists or recurs before the next dose is due

• DO NOT GIVE
  IBUPROFEN AND
  PARACETAMOL
  SIMULTANEOUSLY

  Do not give both agents simultaneously
