Pharmacies deliver 100k flu jabs in first eight days of service

Community pharmacies in England have delivered over 100,000 flu jabs since this year’s immunisation campaign launched, PharmOutcomes entries reveal.

The latest daily tally of flu vaccinations, which is available on the PSNC website, shows that between the seventh and fourteenth of September 101,478 vaccinations were recorded by pharmacies using PharmOutcomes.

The highest number of vaccinations in a single day occurred yesterday (Wednesday September 14), when 30,745 jabs were recorded.

The total is significantly higher than that recorded for the first eight days of last year’s flu vaccination programme (9,207), which launched earlier in the month, but lower than in the same eight-day period in 2021 (106,438).

Flu vaccinations are currently available on the NHS to over-65s, pregnant women, frontline adult social care workers and people with certain medical conditions,

From mid-October, free flu vaccines will be offered to people aged 50 and over.

PSNC services director Alastair Buxton told Pharmacy Network News: "Year on year contractors and pharmacy teams put a huge amount of effort into providing NHS flu vaccinations, and they continue to want to build on their achievements.

“In recent years pharmacies have seen a significant increase in demand for vaccination against flu.

“This has largely been due to the COVID-19 pandemic raising public awareness of the dangers of respiratory illness and wider concerns around the pressures on and lack of access to the healthcare system in winter.

“More and more people are therefore planning ahead and enquiring about vaccination earlier than ever before."
