Introduction and module overview

Osteoporosis (OP) is a progressive condition in which the bones become increasingly weak due to the tissue deteriorating and mineral density decreasing. This renders sufferers at increased risk of fragility fractures – broken bones as a result of trauma, which would not normally cause such an injury were the bone fully healthy.

Structure

Pre-consultation

Covers potential concerns a patient with osteoporosis may have and a reminder of key treatments.

Starting the consultation

Includes exploration of the patient’s existing knowledge.

Questions to ask during the consultation

Incorporates useful advice for the patient.

Ending the consultation

Features handy prompts to check the patient’s understanding as well as signposting to related resources.

Practice pointer

The information in this module – and on OP prescribing more generally – is based on guidance published by the National Osteoporosis Guideline Group and the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network. Look at the patient information leaflet and quick reference guide for each respectively to further your understanding.
